Public Transit Bus Operator Safety Act
ATU Local 714 Supports Public Transit Bus Operator Safety A
ATU Local 714 is proud to support legislation aimed at finally addressing one of the most serious and ongoing issues in public transit: the safety of bus operators.
The proposed law, known as the Public Transit Bus Operator Safety Act, requires the installation of fully enclosed, durable security barriers on large heavy-duty transit buses operating on fixed routes in Maine. These barriers are designed to prevent assaults and protect operators from physical contact, bodily fluids, and thrown objects—hazards that operators continue to face on a regular basis.
Under this legislation:
- Transit providers operating in municipalities over 20,000 population must install barriers on all large heavy-duty buses in service
- Barriers must fully enclose the operator’s workspace while maintaining visibility and communication
- No bus without a compliant barrier may operate in service after August 1, 2029
- A dedicated Public Transit Bus Operator Safety Fund will provide financial support for barrier installation
- Labor input is required during procurement through joint labor-management safety committees
This legislation represents a major step forward in recognizing that operator safety is not optional—it is essential to maintaining reliable public transit service.
